About the Project
Interface Global is the world’s leader in modular carpeting with over 75 locations spread literally across the globe in every continent with the exception of Antarctica. It’s rare indeed to find a company of this size that has an environmental conscience of any sort let alone the drive for sustainability that Interface has. Their Mission Zero commitment (to eliminate any negative impact Interface has on the environment by 2020) has led them to build many LEED certified buildings and seek alternative energy sources such as natural gas and solar power.
Interface needed an infographic to run with the main article in their internal magazine that would show their network of manufacturing plants, retail locations, and showrooms while emphasizing their focus on green technology. This was achieved through the mapping of said locations onto a representation of the globe along with highlights of their awards and facilities.
To create the image, I first outlined a world map which I then wrapped around a sphere and titled on axis to create a sense of movement and interest in the final graphic. I pixilated the edges of the continents into large blocks to connect with Interface’s modular carpeting style (the product they are famous for). The popup boxes were inspired by Interface’s own branding as seen in the Mission Zero logo with an arrow drawn from the edge of a rectangular box.
Custom icons and graphics were made using a combination of Adobe Illustrator, Flash, and Photoshop to represent the various types of locations and sustainability accolades. Since Interface has a number of separate business lines, the icons were color coated to identify the brand they belong to.
